H.A.L.T. - Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?I had to revise this post! Originally I focused it solely on early sobriety. And while H.A.L.T. has saved my butt numerous times in early sobriety, it continues to today. This coping tool is not at all exclusive to those of us battling addiction. It’s a highly effective tool that everyone should be using as their first line of defense!

Don’t let its simplicity fool you. I’ve witnessed three separate therapists suggesting it to clients in clinical settings. Next time you find yourself discontented, H.A.L.T. Ask yourself if you’re Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired? You’d be surprised at how often the solution is an easy one!

You’ll still find some notes specifically geared towards recovery below the graphic =)

H.A.L.T. - Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?

H.A.L.T. In Sobriety

  • Hungry: It seems as though we’re all so busy anymore. And if you’re anything like me, you easily get caught-up in what you’re doing & lose track of time. Suddenly it’s 4:00 p.m., you’re wondering why you just told off that cashier for no reason, & then you realize – Wait, I haven’t eaten one morsel of food all day long! This scenario can play out in many different ways  & have many tragic outcomes, one even being relapse. We all need to eat. Here’s a Guide on Healthy Eating In Recovery.
  • Angry: “Resentment is the number one offender.” Anger & resentment can push us to do things we’ll desperately regret. Though anger is a natural human emotion, we don’t have to feed into it. There are steps we can take to lessen its intensity. We can start by setting clear boundaries & trying to avoid people, places, & things that trigger anger & resentment. If you need help doing so, ask your sponsor or work with a therapist. Here is a Guide on Managing Anger.
  • Lonely: Loneliness can send us into a downward spiral quickly if we allow it to. But the beautiful part about recovery is that we’re never alone. There’s always a 12-step meeting we can go to or a friend/sponsor from A.A. we can call. Sometimes the hardest part is picking up that phone. This is when we have to get real honest with ourselves about our recovery. Remember, you are NEVER alone. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK{8255}
  • Tired: We all get worn down from time-to-time & we all deserve a day off. Don’t be hardheaded. Is your sobriety worth it? We’re simply not good decision-makers when we’re tired. Get some rest!
