My Current Biggest Blogging Challenge

I still refer to myself as a “newbie” when it comes to blogging. I started The Sunny Shadow in late November 2014. I also half-way jokingly say that I have no business starting a blog because I have zero tech knowledge. But here I am.

What draws me to blogging is its countless creative aspects. There are so many different ways to convey a single message. I also thought this was a good time to find something for myself; as my children are getting older & I’m already having mini panic attacks over them leaving to go to college. My 15-year-old is actually who suggested blogging to me in the first place!

Though I did months of research before starting my blog, I’ve still had my challenges. There’s still SO MUCH to learn ALL THE TIME. Not a day goes by that I don’t learn something new; which is great! Years ago I sketched & painted but now I’m learning to channel that creativity into different mediums. I’ve also found that I love learning!

Sometimes though, it can feel a bit overwhelming. I have to admit, there have been a couple of times {earlier on} I considered throwing my hands-up. But people expect that, so it’s obviously not an option! Most importantly, I don’t want to let myself down. This is something I enjoy & I’m committed to making successful.

I’ve heard of people getting in their own way but never fully grasped the concept, until now. Ugh! Let me explain… I’m grateful that I’m able to find inspiration in just about anything & anyone everyday. That’s been useful. The challenge, I think, stems from being an introvert. My curiosity is constantly peaked. Rather than simply taking that inspiration & converting it into a blog post, I follow it down a rabbit hole. I think, “how interesting” & “I wonder,” until eventually I’ve Googled my heart out & have three scholarly articles & two other posts sitting in front of me. I then sit there wondering how I’m going to make sense of it all & how I’m going to narrow it all down to one simple blog post. Something that should’ve taken me a couple of hours has now taken me a couple of weeks. I planned to post it on this day but because I decided to go down the rabbit hole, I had to postpone it & write simpler blog posts to fill its place. This takes me away from working on the original post altogether. Sigh. See… I’m exhausting. Not to mention trying to keep up with social media, all the learning still to be done, & my family life.

I’m sure I will figure this out eventually, hopefully sooner than later. I think I have some great ideas, it’s just a matter of seeing them through. Of course, I can be a perfectionist. So that’s probably a factor too. Progress not perfection.

  1. Hi Krista,

I enjoyed this post very much because I face my own challenges everyday and want to throw the towel 99% of the time. There is so much to learn and I am a very impatient type of girl. I struggle to get readers and subscriber and that gets me really upset. What am I doing wrong?

I am happy I fell upon your blog. I purchased a blogging course by Lisa Sauter and she suggested Blog Staycation and saw your review. I love the content and layout of your page! Its beautiful.

    1. Thank you Sheila! Yes, as a new blogger I found BlogStaycation very informative! Lots of tips, tools, & connections with other bloggers. I visited your site & I LOVE it! It’s gorgeous! My blog is still young & finding its way but I’m part of a private blogging group on Facebook that has helped me grow tremendously. If you’d like I’d be more than happy to suggest an invite for you. It’s a very supportive environment.

Besides connecting & learning from other bloggers… Putting in a lot of time promoting our blogs is important {& something I need to work on}. Like on social media, locally… there’s so many different ways. And then there’s SEO. So much to learn ALL THE TIME! Sigh =-)

Thanks so much for stopping by! Let me know about the Facebook group! Have a fabulous weekend!

Krista, you are the best! Honestly, i have been trying my best to connect with other bloggers and find it so difficult to do so. I would love an invite to the FB page. Theres so much i need to learn! Thank you so much for your feedback. It means alot. I am looking into switching to WordPress.

I have subscribed to your blog 😉

      2. Sheila, you are so sweet. I’m on it! One of the moderator’s is taking the weekend off. So you may not hear anything until early next week. Thank you so much for subscribing to my blog! I saw that & it made my day =-) We’ll be in touch!

        Have a great weekend!

      3. Aw, maybe next time! I cant afford to pay for it but maybe in the near future. Im really debating on switching to WordPres… Blogger is getting on my never. I cant seem to figure out this whole subscribibe, emailing thing. I want to get my post send automatically to my subscribers via email. I cant figure it out! 🙁

Hey, how what do you think about my blog name…. Ohshayshay? Do you think thats unique? Your feedback is appreciated 🙂

        Thank you!

      4. Sheila,

For sending emails to your subscribers, do you use a service like MailChimp or Mad Mimi? I’m currently using the free version of MailChimp to schedule my emails. They make it fairly easy. The RSS part can be kind of confusing but they supply lots of reference materials.

I like your blog name because it seems personal. I can see {hear} someone close to you saying that to you… “Oh Shay Shay” =-) I’m curious though, & it may be obvious, but how does the anchor tie into it all?

Hope some of this was helpful. Hope you’re having a great week!
